Barrel and close pipe nipples do the same job: they connect components with female threads. The difference is easiest to see in the middle of the part. A barrel nipple leaves a smooth section between its threaded ends. A close nipple has no plain section between them. That change affects how much of the body is available to grip.
When describing a replacement, measure the loose part from one end face to the other. Pipe nipples are measured over their full length, including the threaded portions. The gap visible between two assembled fittings leaves out the ends screwed inside them, so that gap cannot stand in for the overall measurement.
Length does not settle every detail. Record the connection type too. NPT and BSP are separate thread systems; a nominal diameter alone does not identify which one is needed. A replacement list should keep the thread designation with the size, rather than leaving it in a separate note that can be missed.
We supply black, galvanized and stainless steel pipe nipples at Cangzhou Zexi. Drawings or samples can be used for special requirements. For an enquiry, specify the pattern, total length, material and end details together. Choosing between barrel and close patterns starts with the space between the fittings, while the drawing records the part that must fit that space.
