Impact of Pipe Schedule on Pressure Ratings

The "Schedule" (SCH) of a pipe nipple indicates its wall thickness. This dimension directly dictates the pressure rating. Common schedules include SCH40 (Standard) and SCH80 (Extra Heavy). While the outer diameter remains constant for a given nominal size, the inner diameter changes.


For example, a 3 8 stainless steel pipe nipple in SCH80 has a thicker wall than one in SCH40. The thicker wall reduces the internal bore but increases the maximum working pressure. Engineers select SCH80 for high-pressure hydraulic or steam lines. SCH40 is sufficient for standard residential water lines.
