Understanding NPT Thread Sealing Mechanics

The National Pipe Taper (NPT) is the dominant standard for pipe fittings in North America. A male thread joint using NPT has tapered threads. The diameter of the thread decreases slightly toward the end of the fitting. When mated with a female fitting, the threads compress against each other. This interference creates a mechanical seal.

In contrast, straight threads do not seal via the threads themselves. They require a gasket or O-ring. B2B buyers must confirm the thread standard before ordering a screw joint pipe. Mismatched threads, such as mixing NPT with British Standard Pipe (BSP), will cause leaks and damage the fitting.

Cangzhou Zexi Pipe Fittings Co., Ltd. is a China supplier specializing in NPT, DIN, and ISO thread standards. We use calibrated ring gauges to verify thread pitch and taper angle. A proper threaded joint in pipe systems withstands internal pressure without leaking. We recommend using Teflon tape or pipe dope during installation to lubricate the connection and fill microscopic voids.
